Multiple media experiences have permitted me to explore and discover many options during my thirty-year career. I've found that acrylics on canvas suit my impulsive nature and my need to work intuitively and quickly, bringing in assorted other media and materials as needed. Although early images were dependent on detailed, realistic interpretations, I became less and less satisfied with technical depiction's and began to search for other elements on which to focus, such as pattern, followed by a move toward minimalism. My need to simplify became dominant to the point of pure abstraction, a process that I find tremendously satisfying. Many of my works contain soft geometric shapes which, in combination, may suggest aerial landscapes or linear divisions, sometimes interpreted as horizons. These suggestions are descriptive, but would be personal assumptions, not necessarily mine. My current drift is toward minimal compositions. In order to avoid creating a static environment and to give a sense of energy, an undercurrent of random gestural marks of graphite or crayon became an integral part of the work. To further simplify the compositional essesence, the paintings are without frames, freeing them of the concept of packaged containment. Karen Jacobs |
