Karen Jacobs
paints large, tremendously sophisticated abstractions. She uses fine
lines to segment the surface of her works into carefully integrated planes
of color. There is a structural pattern that suspends vivid color
hues in shallow space, rather like casual curtains against relatively neutral
backgrounds. Her uses of textures are delicate and
Jacobs' paintings
range from warm, almost gentle hues of pale greens and earth tones that
suggest early spring to intense, deep reds, blues and blacks that provide
and introduction to a sense of power and heat. All her work has a
strong, architectonic quality, a feeling of ordered variety that is compelling
and satisfying. In some instances one feels a sense of order that
resembles the view of looking down at a cultivated
