2009 RETROSPECTIVE

The show at the Kennedy Douglass Center For the Arts in Florence, Alabama, featured five cornerstone series on which my work has pivoted over time. The timelines overlap as old and new series merged, but all series pointed to an eventual focus on abstraction and non-objective painting.

Stripes/Knots- an early Gene Davis influence, an introduction to contemporary art.

Grasses - or any elongated leaf form such as pampas, palm or bamboo. Looking beyond flowers to the unnoticed tangle of old and new leaves.

Patterns/Tracks - initially based on rug patterns but became more abstract, leaving signs of passage, or track makers.

Geometric Abstracts and Bokusho's - which are still evolving and I expect will merge.

This has been a revealing search into my past work. I had to narrow my focus, eliminating genre such as landscapes and still lifes because they are ongoing and not defining work. Media included: watercolor, oil, acrylic, mixed media, serigraphy, monoprint and encaustic.

My thanks to the Kennedy Douglass Center For The Arts in Florence, Alabama, for this opportunity.
