A very early series based on the influence of the vertical stripe paintings of Gene Davis.
I'd been studying and painting realism in the classic sense until we moved to the DC area (early 70's) and I was visiting large museums for the first time. A Gene Davis retrospective at the Corcoran Gallery took my breath away as I became aware of all contemporary art could be... this was a major breakthrough for me and my future efforts. I began classes at Maryland School of Art and Design in Silver Spring, MD, and another breakthrough came with a class in serigraphy... or silk screen printing. I continued with this medium (not exclusively, but intensely) for the next ten years. It was the path I needed to focus on the flat shapes and lines I sought in contemporary painting. The Stripe Series included both paintings on canvas and screen prints.
