| About
the Art
Other than an ongoing interest
in remnants and patterns left by the ages, my paintings have no messages
or hidden agendas. Perhaps cues are taken from familiar surroundings,
and perhaps the steamy southern summers, rich patinas of aged surfaces
and the mystery of found juxtapositions do find their way into my
work. But not as images, not obviously and certainly not intentionally.
There is, of course, the
seed of an idea or a bit of a plan when I begin, but I am quickly directed
by the work, answering the needs, sorting the puzzles and discovering solutions.
I work with layers of thick and thin color, washed or scumbled over a textured
surface. Traces are left by assorted mark makers, lines are straight, curved
or gestural, surfaces are wiped, dripped and spattered; all adding to an
eventual sense of accumulation and the essence of time.

About the Artist
The early years of my art
education and career were pursued as possible, following the needs
of family. A move to Washington,
D.C. permitted both the time and opportunity for studies at
the Maryland College of
Art and Design and with outstanding artists in the area where watercolor
and serigraphy became my
preferred mediums. Another move to Alabama in 1976 provided my
first gallery experience
as both exhibitor and assistant director, as well as other opportunities
to
pursue art as a professional.
.
My focus was almost entirely
on watercolor when we relocated to New Orleans in 1986 and
the grasses and other series
from nature developed and became my primary subjects for the
next ten years. Competing
frequently in juried exhibitions on national and international levels
and becoming involved with
local and national art organizations was an important learning
experience. I credit
competition for sharpening my skills and and the many awards received
for giving me the confidence
to build on my professional art career, knowing my paintings could
stand in good company in
national competitions..
In the mid nineties, my highly
detailed work began to seek the abstract. Several series document
the changes which occurred
during this time, until I finally left image references totally behind.
Current paintings are done
in a manner which allows me to explore and discover beyond the familiar.
Although I've painted extensively
in oils and watercolor, I've found that acrylics on canvas suit my
impulsive nature and need
to work intuitively and quickly, bringing in assorted other mediums and
materials. The abstracts
have been well received, which has provided the necessary encouragement
to stretch and test my abilities
freely.
Representation over the years
has included fine art galleries in Alabama, Florida, Georgia,
Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi,
New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina,
Tennessee and Washington
D.C. Exhibitions have included several countries.
Private collectors are world
wide.
